Aruba’s California Lighthouse and the Bushiribana Gold Mine Ruins
Two popular attractions that should not be missed are Aruba’s California Lighthouse, located on the island’s northwest tip near the Tierra del Sol golf course and the Bushiribana Gold Mine Ruins. The name of the lighthouse did not come from the Golden State in the USA but from a shipwreck sitting in the ocean just off the shore. The ship sunk just a few years prior to the construction in 1910. The Bushiribana Gold Mine Ruins are located near the site of the famous, but now collapsed Natural Bridge. Both attractions offer a fascinating view of Aruba’s past.
The Bushiribana Gold Mine Ruins have the appearance of a fortress from medieval times. The walls that remain are comprised of large stones that give the look of an ancient castle. Its history dates back to a Spanish explorer who laid claim to the area and dubbed it “OroHubo” which means “there was gold there.” Few believed he was right due to the arid climate. For over a hundred years, no gold was found. Gold was finally discovered in 1824. As well as being a gold mine, the site was also used as a smelting point for gold mined elsewhere on the island. Visiting the site with a tour guide is recommended as that there are no signs or explanatory material.
Aruba’s California Lighthouse was designed and built by an architect from France. The northwest tip of the island where it is located is referred to as “hudishibana.” Some of Aruba’s most spectacular views can be seen from this area. Huge rocks surround the site and provide an interesting landscape. Around the site is an area called California sand Dunes. This is a popular spot for dune surfing which involves sliding down the hills with no equipment but the clothes on your back. The ship for which the lighthouse is named is now a popular dive site. There also is an excellent Italian restaurant form which diners can view spectacular sunsets.
Aruba’s California Lighthouse and Bushiribana Gold Mine ruins are attractions not to be overlooked. A trip to this tropical paradise certainly includes time spent relaxing on the beach and partaking in the various water sports, there is much more to do as well. Aruba is filled with a variety of interesting sites that will give your trip a unique flavor that only this island could.
