My yard has almost zero grass...and not much dirt with some shade, slope, roots and sump drainage..what to do?
My back yard has a little shade, but it still gets it's fair share of sun. The yard slopes down gradually to the back corner of the rectangular yard. There is fairly significant drainage from a sump pump in the basement. This sump drains out from under the deck and has created a large bare spot with tree roots revealed. This is the case over most of the back yard. Tree roots are a bit exposed, not much grass.
My question is...can I pick up a bunch of dirt 5 or 10 ton...wheel it in...spread it out...then seed it and rake it and expect a better growth of grass this year than the terrible display or lack of grass I currently have?
Also, regarding the sump pump drain...i've thought of burying a 55 gallon drum, filling it with gravel and draining the sump into it to disappate the water deeper into the ground, thus keeping it from washing away new landscaping...
Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch for your help!

I thought that a sump pump drain was supposed to be pumbed into something like a storm drain or so. Well I will give as much info on the thing as I know.
First you need to solve the drain problem. I would do this and it should not be to hard either. I would build a french drain around the where the water pumps out. I would then connect a pvc pipe to that and bury it underground and have the end of the pipe pour the water out into a area that will not be affected by the water. That would solve the water washing everything away part.
Second you need to place soil over the bare roots. If your yard holds water it may have a lot of of clay in the soil. It should lose water pretty fast if its a slope. Clay holds water. So what you need to do is add some sand to the soil and that will help drain it out faster. Also use some good soil without weed byproducts in it.
Third you need to get some shade/sun mix grass seeds. Follow the directions on the bag as to how much seeds to square foot ratio and so on. read what it says about the type of fertilizer it needs and then follow the directions on that bag. Some needs to go down before the seeds, with the seeds, or after the seeds. some needs to be put down and wetted while others need to be dry for 24 hours.
Fourth (Optional) Since the ground slopes already you could cut notches into the sand and make steps. If it slopes very slowly then you could still barely notch the land out and places some walking stones to create a path appearance. Around the deck you should plant some water loving shady short shrubs. Ones that are like little shorter than your deck floor. ((( Dont cover the drain you place))) They will also help to suck up some more of the water.
If you want you could also place some ground cover plants along the stone steps or so.
Fifth. (optional) You could also build some retaining walls with faced bricks that are about a 12-15 inches from the tree trunk ad then place some kind of nice mulch inside the wall.

Earth worms are also super good to have. You could go ahead and place them now before the fertilizer ( it can kill them) they make holes in the dirt which allows it drain faster and they also give out great nutrients into the ground and are safe.
