Why should you buy your plants from local nurseries?
Why should a person buy from a local nursery versus going to the local big box retailer and buying the plants they have? Because of service, value, and information. Next time you need plants for the garden drive on down to the local nursery and meet the people who are in the business to give you the very best in service and information as well as a great plant.
Big Box retailers have caught on that there are huge profits in selling plants to people. You've seen the rows and rows of flowers and small shrubs all neatly lined up. The prices are excelent but the selection is somewhat limited. There are problems when buying from one of these giant retaliers like having a bad experience because you took home a plant that looked great at the store but soon died because it was not watered properly. Now most Big Box stores do have a warranty so you can bring back your dead plant for a replacement but you do have to spend your time and gas to get the plant. How much is the time and gas worth to you? If you buy a $3.00 plant and you spend $3.00 to go back and get another was it really worth the savings you thought you had? This experience is very common especially with trees and shrubs.
Trees and shrubs have a longer lifecycle so you may not see the damage from underwatering right away. Small plants show the damage right away so that is why if you look around you can usually find huge areas of dead plant material that they will ask the vendor to take away or sell at drastically reduced prices. You do get what you pay for in plant material. I have gone through the Big Box Store Nurseries and saw the employees giving inaccurate information just because of a lack of experience. People at Local Nurseries Love Plants.
When you visit your local mom and pop nursery you are sure to find people who have invested their lives in the plants you are looking at. This is why most Landscapers buy from local nurseries. Their mortgage rides on the care and sale of those plants. Knowledge abounds about the plants available at local nurseries because their name and reputation rides on your experience. At Big Box Retailers the employees go home at the end of the day and nothing is at stake for them so obviously the care is a little less. At most local nurseries there is a greater variety of plants because these people love plants and they are willing to stock up on different interesting plants to try to sell. If you have questions you are sure to find a person willing to answer your questions as well as help you understand what you are buying and how to care for it. I would like to see more people shop at their local mom and pop nurseries because these people will give you plants that have been cared for properly, knowledge you will need, a caring friendly attitude that will make you want to come back again and again.
