Landscaping help???
Hi i am redoing my landscaping slowly and trying to figure out what is best to do. The front flower bed is a rectangle 20x8 and then a few small ones here and there. I have a 4 dwarf hollys a japanese maple and a pampas grass in the front. RIght now i dont have anything but weeds and gras growing up in all the flower beds. I would actually like to use some type of ground cover such as a Mulch or White Rock. Should i use roundup around everything then lay down that tarp stuff then lay down mulch or rock? Would that keep everything from growing up??? And i cant decide between Rock or Red Mulch... What is best and most cost effecient? Also in terms of much is the plain 3.00 a bag red mulch just as good as the 5.00 Scotts brand that says the color will last longer??? Thank you for your opionions.!!!
You could use roundup but be very careful not to get it on the leaves or trunk of the plants you want to keep. You can put a piece of cardboard up to block the spray. if you spray something you want by mistake, hose down the plant immediately and it will probably survive.
Weeds etc grow where there is a bare space with light and water. Mulch and rock are only temporary solutions as weed seeds blow in, or are dropped by birds so these areas will have to be weeded eventually. Weed mat is only good for plants from under the ground and is now not being used in mixed plant gardens as it stunts the plants you want to grow in the bed by not allowing enough oxygen and water to reach plant roots.
Fill the bed with low maintenance shrubs and ground covers. Mulch around with chip initially. Once the bed is full no room for weeds, very little maintenance and won't date. Gravel gardens are starting to go out of fashion now.
If you decide to go for the mulch remember all will loose their colours in a few years, and the rock get dirty and mossy depending on your climates and you may have to wash after a period of time to get an 'as new look'.
whatever you choose to do once you cover the ground the weed problem is considerably reduced.
