In my previous article, Do We Have A Future contained several challenges about the potential of a future. It concluded by saying there is a future. There are four areas of concern, dooms if you will, that contain speculated cause for alarm: food, pollution, population, and energy.
The first doom is food and its distribution to the world's population. 1.02 billion people do not have enough to eat - more than the populations of USA, Canada and the European Union;

Jerry Pournelle claims food production is less critical than we have been lead to believe. He is not implying or even suggesting that there isn't hunger and starvation in our world. What he is saying is given the energy, food production becomes relatively simple. Using hydroponic tanks a green house ten feet per side can produce enormous amounts of food. If just one percent of the buildings in New York City used roof-top gardens ten per cent of its population could be fed. One third of Los Angeles' population could be fed if it used one per cent of its surface area for agricultural purposes.
Aquaculture, holds considerable promise. Experiments at St Croix, in England and France have demonstrated significant levels of food production. In the US, Dr. Dennis Hedgecock of USC has shown success in farming of bigger and faster growing oysters. Oysters are high in nutritional value. It is estimated that ten times more food can be grown in the sea than on land. The threat of world starvation can be eliminated. The technology is available. Doom two will be discussed in the next article.
