How to Teach Your Kids Self Sufficiency by Raising Chickens at Home
Do your kids think everything they eat just appears on a supermarket shelf? Are they unaware that their favorite cereal begins with wheat growing in a field or that the ham in their sandwich started out as a curly-tailed, grunting pig? Would your kids have no idea how to produce any food of their own?
Even if you live in the city, you can change all that by getting some back yard chickens for your kids.
With more and more people choosing to join the urban farming movement, chickens in the back yard are increasing popular and much easier to keep than you might think. With a small chicken coop and a place for the chickens to forage, you are all set. Chickens are especially beneficial for children who fill up on chicken burgers and egg waffles but have never been close to a live chicken before.
Back yard chickens show kids where food really comes from.
Even without a rooster, hens lay eggs, though the eggs will not hatch into chicks. One hen will lay four or five eggs a week so, with a just a few hens, your family can be well supplied with fresh, delicious, chemical-free eggs. Your children will hear the hen clucking loudly every time she produces a new egg. They will get a huge kick out of collecting the eggs to put in the fridge for breakfast or to use making cookies.
Children learn they can care for chickens by themselves.
With some food, water and shelter, chickens pretty well look after themselves. However, they need daily attention in the form of feeding, watering and shutting them safely up at night. Children learn all about the amount of regular care it takes so that their favorite hen can produce an egg. They also learn responsibility and pride in taking good care of their chickens on their own.
Kids take a big step towards food self sufficiency.
When kids raise chickens themselves, they also learn that they can produce their own food at home. The eggs and meat provided by the chickens did not come from the supermarket but from the family’s own efforts in the back yard. Combine this lesson with a successful garden and your children have already taken a big step towards freedom in the form of food independence. They need never be totally dependent upon the supermarket again.
A few backyard chickens can give your kids a precious lesson in self sufficiency that will last them the rest of their lives.
