The Health Benefits of Gardening
A nice lawn, plenty of trees and beautiful flowering plants can give a home great curb appeal. While it is nice to have a beautiful garden, it takes a lot of work to get and keep it looking beautiful. Instead of hiring a gardener to do all the physical labor, consider working on the garden yourself.
The health benefits of gardening cannot be underestimated. While you don't want to rush out and start gardening in the 90 degree sun, you should try to work on your garden during the early morning hours and when the sun is not so strong.
Gardening involves the use of many muscles. If you are planting some trees or maybe some shrubs, you'll have to dig the holes first. Strike some hard dirt or some roots and you'll quickly learn that digging is great exercise. You will use your shoulders, arms and back and if you're not in shape, you will soon find your body weak and your muscles achy.
To have a nice flower bed, the weeds have to be pulled out by the roots. You can't just take a weed eater and chop off the tops because the weeds will grow right back. You'll get plenty of exercise bending down and pulling weeds. Put on some gloves and start pulling. This exercise will help with your flexibility and balance. You can also develop your wrists and forearms if you pull enough weeds.
A very good aerobic exercise is mowing the lawn. Unless you happen to have 5 acres of land to mow, you will probably be able to get by with a walk behind lawn mower. Cutting your lawn is a great aerobic exercise. You simply walk back and forth, cutting the grass as you go. If you happen to be cutting some hilly terrain, that is even more aerobically challenging.
One additional health benefit of gardening is that you can grow your own healthy vegetables and fresh fruit. A juicy tomato or some green beans are easy to plant and grow in a home garden. If you live in a tropical climate, citrus trees are great. Picking a few oranges or grapefruits outside your back door and squeezing some fresh juice is a healthy alternative to drinking a coke.
Before you start gardening, make sure your health is ok. Enjoy yourself, take your time and realize the many health benefits of gardening.
