Fall Gardens

Gardening in the fall? That's what I thought too the first time I had heard about it. For most of us that garden we are use to just gardening in the spring and summer months. However, fall gardening can produce great vegetables, and can actually extend your crops after the spring crop has already been harvested. Generally, vegetables grown in the fall are milder and oftentimes even fairly sweet then those grown in the summer months, giving a whole new taste to your favorite greens.

Fall gardening is pretty much the same as spring gardening. You will want to plant the foods that you like to consume, and make sure that you have adequate space in your garden to grow them. A lot of the heat loving plants such as peppers, potatoes, and tomatoes will still produce great results up until you get the first frost. If you live in the south, then the first frost usually happens pretty late in the year. Beans and cucumbers on the other hand will not grow very well at all, as they tend to stop growing towards the end of the summer. You can however still get some produce from them if you were to plant them in the middle of summer. Most vegetables will continue to grow until the temperature drops to a low and steady 20 degrees.

When you start to plant your fall garden, your best bet is to choose plants that have a short growing cycle. This will allow them to grow and be harvested with time to spare before the temperature gets too cold. Always look for seed packages that make statements about early season or just a few days until maturity. These are great fall gardening plants. Usually the best time to purchase these seeds from your local garden center is in the early spring or summer months, and just save the seed packets until the fall when you are ready to plant them. Be sure to store the seeds in a cool dry location.

If you do not have a Farmer's Almanac around you should purchase one. Reading these can give you a better idea on the amount of time that you have before the first big frost hits your local area. These almanacs are pretty cheap, and give out some great information.

Most gardeners will probably never attempt to try fall gardening. I tried it last year for the first time and I loved it, and I am definitely going to do it this year as well. For those that enjoy gardening, and the normal garden season too short, I would recommend you give it a shot this year.
